In 2009 Bill O'Hare created Deception Recognition Consultants. With 4 decades of Law Enforcement experience, including time as an SVU Detective and Death Investigator, he has interviewed and interrogated countless suspects, witnesses and victims. Over the years Bill has analyzed thousands of written and oral interviews for deception patterns and came to the realization that so much of what is taught to investigators and the general public regarding detecting deception through analysis of words, body language and facial expressions, is based upon myths, extreme generalizations and misinformation.
Bill has attended a multitude of lie detection, deception recognition and body language classes over the decades and was consistently disappointed with the myths that were perpetuated by the instructors. For example: If you look to the right when answering a question you are lying. If you have your arms folded in front of you, you are defensive and likely lying. If you avoid eye contact you are lying. If you hesitate when answering a question, you are lying. The biggest myth of all; That when analyzing a person for deception through communication, that 55 percent of communication is in the subject's body language, 38 percent of communication is in the subject's voice and tone, and only 7 percent of communication is in the subject's words. This 1960s experiment by Albert Mehrabian is likely the most misunderstood and improperly taught theory ever taught to students. "It is extremely self limited in scope and has very little to do with deception recognition as a whole, yet every class I seem to have attended made sure to perpetuate the fallacy attached to its content. When I'd question the instructor about it, it was evident that they were merely passing on what they learned without any real understanding of the actual experiment and its results", Bill has stated.

"I routinely sit and stand with my arms folded across the front of my body, not because of being deceptive but because of physical comfort. It is how I elevate back pain and find it most the relaxing way to position myself", Bill says, yet that position is consistently taught as meaning the subject is on guard, lying etc.
